Toys that Teach! Rings and Cones

~ Rings and Cones ~

Ideas to Foster Development of Coordination, Visual Motor, and Speech Skills!

A simple set of cones and rings can offer unlimited potential for coordination, balance, visual-motor, and cognitive skills!

Match the Colors: Start simple by having your child match different colored rings to the same color cone! This encourages color recognition, following one-step directions, and hand-eye coordination by placing the ring on the cone. Here are a few ideas to add to this activity to work on other skills!

  • Have your child place the rings on the cones using their feet to work on balancing on one foot!
  • Call out colors in a specific order to work on memory while placing the rings on the cones in that order!
  • Get on your belly over a peanut ball and place the rings on the cones in this position to work on arm and core strengthening. Add a challenge by crossing midline and placing the rings on a cone on the opposite side of the body!

Coordination Practice: You can use the cones to run practice gross motor skills!

  • Place the cones around the room and have your child run between colors!
  • Set the cones up and practice dribbling around them with a soccer ball!
  • Practice running back and forth to get the rings and then place them on the cones! Or try on a scooter board to add a fun strengthening twist!
  • Toss rings on the cones from varying distances to work on hand-eye coordination!
