~ Shape Sorter ~

Ways to Foster Development of Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy Goals! Requesting, Visual Scanning, Shape Discrimination, Hand-eye Coordination, and Multi-Tasking

Address speech goals!

    • Name the shapes
    • Requesting stating “more” for short phrases or “I want more/the circle/square please” for longer phrases/requests.
    • Counting the number of shapes
    • Following instructions to get a certain shape
    • Spatial concepts including in/out/on
    • Concepts including same/different color or shape

Address occupational therapy goals!

    • Fine motor skills working on fitting shape pieces into the correct hole
    • Problem-solving practice to fit the correct shape in or to sort into the order described by the therapist
    • Visual discrimination to identify and recognize shapes and colors from others
    • Patience and regulating frustration when shapes do not fit in on the first attempt
    • Stack the shapes

Address physical therapy goals!

    • Make an obstacle course! Have a child go get a shape at the end of a balance beam, stairs, or other obstacle course and bring them back to place in
    • Hand-eye coordination to place the shapes in the correct location
    • Multi-tasking with the shape sorter while balancing on one foot, on a squishy surface, or even along a balance beam
    • Play on your belly, over a peanut ball, or kneeling to work on strengthening while reaching for and placing shapes

You can put multiple goals together to address speech, occupational, and physical therapy goals in one! Try it out and let us know how you use your shape sorter!
