Feeding Therapy
SOS Approach to Feeding Therapy
The SOS Approach to feeding therapy was created by Dr. Kay Toomey over 30-years ago and is the only results-driven feeding program that helps children develop a healthy and enjoyable relationship with food. This is a nationally and internationally recognized program that is child-directed and family-centered, and helps children learn new skills they need to eat well and not just survive, but flourish!
The SOS Approach to Feeding stands for Sequential-Oral-Sensory because these are the major components of the program. This program is unique in that it looks at the “whole child” and addresses the physical, medical, nutritional, developmental, environmental, oral motor, postural, and sensory factors involved in the child’s current eating abilities. The SOS Approach focuses on increasing a child’s comfort level by exploring and learning about the different properties of food. This feeding program allows a child to interact with food in a playful, non-stressful way, beginning with the ability to tolerate the food in the room and in front of them, then moving on to managing the smell of the foods, learning about how foods feel on the body and in their mouth, and then enjoying tasting and eating new foods following the Steps to Eating.
